Man, this kind of sucks. If the economy gets any worse and any more manufacturers go bankrupt then everybody will have to merge and there will be one giant 43 car team. LOL. I can't believe DEI had to merge... twice. I bet if Junior had control his name power alone would have been enough to get sponsors for a couple of years. Too bad.

I don't think so. He can't find a sponsor for the car/driver who will finish third in the points in the Nationwide Series. He has two wins, one coming at a companion cup race.

Heres another one for ya, HOF racing, This would be the perfect opportunity for them to allign themselves with a top caliber operation, (I think JGR is screwing them) I think Stewart-Haas racingwould be a good pairing or the Wood Brothers or maybe GEM. Unfortunately the way the economy is now, a single car team or even a multi-car team without sponsorship cannot survive.

With the Penske, GEM, Petty and RGM, I doubt Chrysler (Dodge) will care too much about the loss of the Ganassi Dodges. All it would take is GEM to add a 4th Dodge and Petty to add a 3rd Dodge to make up for the loss of the 41 & 42 Dodges in terms of car count, and then either Penske adding a 4th Dodge or RGM adding the 2nd team he keeps talking about but never actually does, and that'll make up for the lost 40 Dodge. Dodge doesn't really lose here at all just by losing Ganassi's underperforming teams. Also let's not forget, Felix Sabates ran Chevys before Chip Ganassi bought into the team.

The big loser in all this would seem to be Regan Smith's #01 team. That team will apparently cease to exist now, which is a shame all around. Regan won the race in Talladega, even though NASCAR's enforce-it-when-they-choose-to ruling took it away from him and that team. While Regan might land in the 41, RIP team 01.

Also, it wouldn't surprise me at all, now that this is official, to have the #8 run with the Target sponsorship currently assigned to the #41 team if no sponsorship can be found for the #8 team, and no driver is named for the #41 team by mid-January or so. That would leave Montoya on his own island with the #42 and only half a season of sponsorship. That's an interesting spot for him to be in.

Bottom line, I think this is a good move for all involved. Both teams were underperforming but showing brief sparks of promise. Bringing all efforts under one roof should help everyone there. Who knows, maybe we'll see Truex & Montoya back in the chase in 2009.

And in case anyone's counting...
Hendrick: 4 teams
Roush: 5 teams (must narrow to 4 by 2010 season)
RCR: 4 teams
Earnhardt Ganassi: 4 teams
Wait a sec Hendrick had 5 drivers for this year remember u have Brad in the #25. And i bet if jr was still with DEI he would be [whining] about this with the name geting change because the team was started when Dale sr was alive. Now with this i want to know is there going to keep the E logo on the cars or not.

The only reason Brad is in a fifth Hendrick car is because he has less than 10 or so cup starts. The rulebook says that you can have a fifth car, but only for a driver who has never made a cup start to get some seat time in a cup car so it's fine. Teams must have 4 full time teams max (of course Roush Fenway needs to limit to 4 by 2010).

Good question. Yeah, I was talking with my dad a while back about how a lot of teams were having trouble with sponsors. I mean it was only a few weeks ago Kodak pulled out and went to the PGA(?). Though it seems unlikely that the environment will be down real bad (crosses fingers, knocks on wood) what do you think NASCAR would do to try and pull more money? Or will we begin to see races with only 30 cars?

They will probably be "sold" to other teams who are starting another car team or want the top 35 in owner's points for a ride they already have...not sure if that's legal or not but I would assume it's similar to what Penske did earlier this year with the 2 and 77

Default Earnhardt Ganassi shuts down Ganassi Nationwide team, and Petty?
The wheels on this bus continue to go 'round and 'round.

Yesterday the newly merged Earnhardt Ganassi Racing announced the #40 Nationwide Series team has been shut down.

Originally Posted by Lee Montgomery, Scene Daily

Parrott said seven crew members were laid off from the team, which originally planned to run the full Nationwide schedule next year with Clauson. Four or five other crewmen will be absorbed by the Sprint Cup operation, Clauson said.
But in no way does it stop there. Now there's talk heating up about discussions between Earnhardt Ganassi (aka DEI-Ganassi) and Petty Enterprises that would wind up resulting in Bobby Labonte driving the #41 car in 2009 via negotiating Labonte out of his Petty contract.

That whole discussion appears to be motivated by language in Martin Truex Jr.'s contract that would allow Truex to leave Earnhardt Ganassi if he doesn't have at least 2 fully-sponsored teammates to race with at all times. Should Labonte drive the #41 Target car, he would count as one of the two teammates, with Juan Pablo Montoya's #42 team serving as the other. Aric Almirola's #8 ride would also count, except the #8 currently doesn't have a sponsor for 2009. Rumors have mentioned Stewart-Hass Racing as a possible destination for Truex should he bolt from Earnhardt Ganassi.

Who would replace Labonte in the #43 car? Some signs point to A.J. Allmendinger, who is currently a free agent with Reed Sorenson under contract to drive the #10 car in 2009. Silly Season always having a sense of irony, that would create a small carousel shifting Allmendinger from #10 to #43, Labonte from #43 to #41, and Sorenson from #41 to #10.

Click here for more information about the above carousel of drivers.

Think it stops there? HA! Petty Enterprises now has apparently an announcement to make regarding its future and Labonte's future sometime later today (Thursday). What part, if any, of the aforemention carousel will be confirmed? Who knows. Be sure to tune into to our next episode of "As our Silly Season Turns."

I read on Fox that Labonte indeed is going from Petty Enterprises and is undoubtedly candidate for the #41. DEI-Ganassi could go strong with the speculated driver lineup Truex, Montoya, Almirola and Labonte.
What a mess those Dodge teams.
