A rar is a compressed file type, like .zip's. You need to download WinRAR to uncompress it.

I have found this program will compress files into a smaller file size with less drop of quality than WinZip....but that is just my opinion.

You can download the trial version. It'll still work after 40 days, but it'll just prompt you to register it every time you open the program to uncompress something.
