NASCAR penalizes #15 team for violations at Daytona: NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the No. 15 team that competes in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, as a result of rule infractions found during post-race inspection Feb. 18 at Daytona International Speedway. The No. 15 truck driven by Michael Waltrip was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20B-3.1.2E (rear spoiler did not meet specifications in post-race inspection) of the 2011 NASCAR Rule Book. As a result, crew chief Doug Howe has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Owner Billy Ballew has been penalized with the loss of 25 championship owner points.(NASCAR Integrated marketing Communications)(2-23-2011)

Since I can't think of a clever statement about how essentially retarded that penalty was, I'll just say this:

lol

I still think the same thing the night it happened. The team tried to make the spoiler a bit weaker so that it would flex a bit more thus when at speed lay-back a bit more then it should, however they did something wrong and it just ended up being too weak and snapped.

That or the truck behind Mikey broke the brackets (which I thought would be rather impossible).

Besides, what would NASCAR do when the spoiler fell and it was the last lap of the race? Black-flag him?

I didn't watch the replay of the GWC but I've seen a lot of people say that it actually came down going into turn 3 on the restart lap.

No one noticed, tho, until the final lap (more specifically the backstretch).

Or did they (NASCAR) notice and look over at the broadcast booth and shake their head no signaling them to ignore it because Mikey winning that race would just so happen to draw tons of attention to NASCAR which is exactly what NASCAR wants/needs right now .......... :GEEK:

So are the owners' points still on the old point system or an entirely different system altogether because 25 points on the new system is basically dropping him past mid-pack.

It's the new system, and I agree the punishment doesn't really fit the crime here. I would have been in favor of taking enough points away to where the truck was the lowest finishing truck on the lead lap, which would have been a penalty of 19 points.

Clearly an unacceptably specific amount. These penalties must be a multiple of 5, you know.

Well, it would be easier for the average fan to understand, you know. lol

You can't just let them off scott free. They won a race with half a spoiler.

Bad luck / not his fault - tough luck - people get black flagged all the time.

It was on the last lap so impossible to do that - so you have to give him a post-race.
Taking away the win is very extreme - so this is the next best thing.

You can't just win races with things like that and expect to get away with it - otherwise come Talladega - 43 other spoilers will mysteriously break on the last lap.

If anything this penalty is less then he should be getting.

Lets look at last year where the standard penalty for being illegal after the race was 150pt penalty. Now you had the ability to be awarded 185pts in the race (not including bonus points).

150pt penalty out of 185pts possible = 81% of possible points deducted for penalty.

Now under the new system for being found illegal after the race NASCAR has said "25pt penalty", out of the 43pts you have the ability to get during each race (not including bonus points).

25pt penalty out of 43pts possible = 58% of possible points deducted for penalty.

In-order for the penalty to be the same as the average penalty last year it would have to be a 35pt penalty.

Interesting. Was curious how the penalty's would effect things in terms of percentages. Thats still hurts a lot when you can only score 48 possible points per week.

Really genius because I didn't know that. LOL. What I meant was it seems to be more noticeable now with there being less points on the table for grabs.

Congrats on 3000 posts! It depends on what the penalty is for, it seems high to me for a part failure.

totally missed the post count. thats alot. wow.

Yeah i guess nascar thinks they tampered with the spoiler. I dont see how it would improve his speed though. Wouldnt it actually hurt the balance of the truck since there is no drag, but hurt the down force balance.

You would want the right side of the spoiler to lay down more then the left side, especially with track being as smooth as it is. Air would then cause more drag on the left side of the spoiler helping the truck turn.

Not to mention less overall drag which would help going down the straight.
