Simple, you get the fans to paint the cars. They're so good with coming up with new rules packages with their unlimited knowledge of everything, so why not get them to paint the cars too?!?! Hendrick obviously made the right choice by letting the fans create this beauty.
It is possible for sponsors to want better performance, not saying Kahne was better then Jamie Mac, but company wise 3 of 4 cars went in the chase vs none on CGR and dont forget all the possible associate deals with Gordon, Jr, and JJ just by being on another car in the team. More options.
Makes me think what could have been if Sterling didn't get hurt in 2002. He had that championship in the bagIts not so much the on-track performance, its the activation of the sponsorship. Generally speaking, the "super" teams like HMS can offer more and better options in those areas (whether it be marketing ads, hospitality events, appearances, etc...). Its kind of a common misconception that sponsors jump onboard (with a top team) mostly for the opportunity of seeing their paint scheme up front on TV. While thats certainly a part of it, what they're really after more so than that is the activation opportunities. Thats where they benefit the most when partnering with a top team.
