I have been hearing rumors that Richard Childress is going to open up the #3 for Austin Dillon what are your thoughts on that?

Should not happen. What ever that man is thinking for his spoiled grandson should be shoved out the door. The #3 should be retired forever. No ifs, ands or buts. Dale Earnhardt Jr. should have the exclusive rights to that number, I don't care who the hell owns it. That number represents so much history and represents the Intimidator. Not to some young hotshot who is the team owner's family. /endrant

I actually think that it's alright to be used in Cup again. Yes, it is a tragedy that should be remembered, but Dale Earnhardt should be remembered for his influences on the sport, and his success, and his personality. He should be remembered for who he was, not for what number he drove. I hope no one thinks this is an insensitive opinion, as I find it very respectful that his number went unused for over 11 years, and I think it is okay for it to be brought back. Just my opinion, people are allowed to be opposed, but that's just what I believe.

I don't know, I think that it would look odd without Sr. in the car. It should stay retired, just give him the 33.

I say go for it. Austin is a great driver who I think is the future of RCR. I'll catch hell for this, but I never understood the point of retiring the number 3. Don't get me wrong, I like Earnhardt and he was a great driver, but a) would Earnhardt really want his number to be retired? He always very humble about himself and wanted to be remembered as a good driver and b) is it really necessary to have retained that number until now? I mean, when Richard Petty retired, his #43 made a return 1 year later in 1994. If you ask me, I thought Harv should've taken over the 3 maybe a year or two after Sr.'s death, and its about time at least rumors of the 3 are surfacing.

Well from a marketing standpoint having the 3 would be a huge cash cow for their sponsor, and sponsorship revolves around the ability for NASCAR to be a good source of advertising for the sponsor. So it would for sure help in keeping the car funded. I dont really care ether way, it was and is just a number. Dale was a person and did more than race the number 3, thats what should he remembered for.

I wouldn't do it until Austin wins a Nationwide title. Once he does, then move him to cup.

I have been a Dale Earnhardt Sr and Jr fan for many many years and can say that even though it will not be Sr behind the wheel, it will be awsome to see the 3 back on the track! The 3 or the rights to the 3 are owned by RCR and Richard drove it before he turned it over to Dale Sr, who went on to make his NASCAR Legacy. The Dillon boys have both got talent and it will be their turn to make their NASCAR Legacy's in the upcomming years. It will great to see the 3 circleing the track again!

I don't understand why it matters. I could care less who runs it in any series. And I'm not just hating on Earnhardt fans. I'm a huge Gordon fan, as big as they come, and in the same scenario if another driver were to use it in Cup I wouldn't mind at all. It's just a number, and burtonbraves put it best in his first post.

Not this one. At the very least the font should be changed. Everytime someone sees the number three in that familiar font, they all think "Dale". The #33 is a perfect solution. Why does the #3 have to come back now anyway? He ran the 07 and 33, but honestly, Mr. Childress, driving the #3 is so special that I don't think anyone of Dillon's caliber should control that likeness. Hell, I'm a Kyle Busch fan, I'm supposed to be stupid, right? :-/
A number is not just a number when the sport's arguably greatest driver drove it and passed away in it. It's more than a number. It's Dale. Not some young hotshot kid that thinks he's everything. My opinion. Just saying. Bash me all ya want but this is important, and I think we should all consider the meaning this number has behind it. :)

I think that Its been long enough, the #3 has been out of the cup series since '01 and I think its time to bring it back. HOWEVER; the car should be driven by Dillon or Jr, at least for when they first bring it back, and since Jr is at Hendrick, its gonna be Dillon. I never understood why people are so protective of the #3, its just a number, Dale will and should be remembered for being Dale, not being #3.

The # was Richard's before it was Dale's, while it was Dale's, and still is Richard's number. People seem to forget that there is more to the #3 than Dale Earnhardt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the #07 was because of the Jack sponsorship.

But, I compare this to Richard Petty. I consider both the greatest drivers to have ever been put in the seat of a stock car. Granted he didn't end his career under the circumstances like Earnhardt, but he also ended his career in his iconic number. He won 200 races, 7 Daytona 500's, 7 championships, so should the number halt with his number? And as for the respect thing, I don't think decamping Earnhardt's number is fair to other people who have passed away in race cars. Especially ones with high-profile careers. Take Neil Bonnett for example. I think Finch did the right thing allowing his 51 to continue.

I feel its just a number. We should remember Dale Earnhardt for his incredible accomplishments, not the number he made famous.

100% correct and like most people have been saying...it's just a number!

Sure let the Dillon boys run it. Austin even said himself, that he would be fine running it BUT he would like it to be a different font style.

I was a HUGE Dale Sr. fan, since the mid eighties (note my sig).

Here's my take on this; I believe the style(font) of the number "3" as Dale drove with it from '85-'01 should be retired, never used again.

Now with that said I don't see why they couldn't bring the #3 back with same font that Richard used when he raced in the 70's.

The '85-'01 style #3 will always be tied in with Dale Earnhardt Sr. And I would definitely not want to see that in Cup.
So if Dillon wants to pay homage to his grandad by running his old #3, I'm cool with that.
Just don't touch Dale's #3.
