Scenes made with newer versions of 3ds Max are not compatible with previous versions. In order to get a 3ds Max 9 scene in 3ds Max 8, you would need to open the scene in Max 9 and export the files to either 3ds or obj (obj is more universal among different programs). From there, you would need to import the 3ds or obj into 3ds max 8 and reapply the materials yourself. If you are unfamiliar with making your own materials, you can always merge a vehicle from an existing 3ds Max 8 scene and in the material editor screen, there is a material picker button (similar to the color picker in Photoshop)
**Check Attachment**
Just click the vehicle you merged to copy it's materials and drag and drop the material from the window to your vehicle. You will have to repeat the process for each different material used in the scene.
That's a bit odd. I googled that error and the results I've found says it's because it was saved with a newer version of 3ds Max. However I do have 3ds Max 8 and that is not the case. I just get the typical Brazil errors when I open it but it does open. I'm stumped.
well forgot to mention this: the error says it is missing certain Brazil files required to open the scenes. however, the scenes will NOT open for some reason. (i think its b/c i dont have the required brazil files.
Even without the Brazil files, the scene should still open. You'll just end up with black parts. I don't have Brazil installed at all on my PC since it's not compatible on Vista 64 bit Home Premium. Seems like you have another issue with 3ds Max that I am unable to help you out with since I can't think of what else would give you problems.
if i open certain scenes i'll get an all black, purple, yellow, etc 3D model but no textures i.e. the Racin Grafix Late Model and their Van w/Trailer scene and the Team Om3ga scenes for the NCTS09 Trucks. But the rest of the scenes i have will not open at all.
I'll take one last shot at this. I think that if you can open scenes using Brazil but end up with with either black or other colored parts, there may be two possibilities. One possibility is you do not have Brazil installed correctly. The other is you may want to check your render settings. Press F10, scroll down until you see "Assign Render" at the bottom. Open the tab, make sure "Production" is set to use Brazil. You may have to do the same with "Material Editor" under that (I can't remember for sure). Another thing to keep in mind is there are now two versions of Brazil. Make sure you have version 1.2.21 and NOT Brazil version 2. The files you are not able to open at all may be using Brazil version 2, but I am unable to verify that.
Another idea is to open you Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+Delete) and make sure SFMGR is running in the background. If it is not, Open up a command prompt and point it to the directory where you have that file installed and type "sfmgr" in the prompt and hit enter to start the process and try again. If all else fails, it wouldn't hurt to uninstall Brazil and reinstall it and try again.
