Bruton Smith wants timeouts in NASCAR

From ESPN.com's Terry Blount:
SPARTA, Ky. -- Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman Bruton Smith said NASCAR needs to implement mandatory cautions, or race stoppages, to bring more excitement to the races.

"Call it what you want, but you've got to have caution flags," Smith said Saturday before the Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway. "That creates excitement. You can't just sit there with nothing happening. It ruins the event. It's damaging to our sport."

Cautions flags and caution laps are down this year in NASCAR. Many races this season have produced long green-flag runs without a lot of passing up front.

The Nationwide Series race at Kentucky on Friday night had a record 113 consecutive green-flag laps. Austin Dillon led 192 of 200 laps and won by 9.8 seconds.

Some fans have criticized the 1.5-mile ovals such as Kentucky, saying those tracks are the problem. Smith vigorously disagrees. “

"In my opinion, we cannot go out and start condemning mile-and-a-half speedways," said Smith, who owns five 1.5-mile oval tracks. "They've been around a long time. I built Charlotte (Motor Speedway) in 1960 and it has stood the test of time.

"So don't tell me it's the speedway. Bull. What we have is a tire problem. We have a lot of different problems, but it's not the mile-and-a-half speedways."

Smith said NASCAR needs to deliberately create more double-file restarts. NASCAR made a rule change in 2009 that moved all the lead-lap cars to the front of the field, double-file, on all restarts after a caution flag.

Those restarts often cause bumping late in races, and sometimes additional accidents.

"One of the great things NASCAR has done is the dual restarts," Smith said. "I look forward to those. We need to see more dual restarts. Three (per race) aren't enough. You need eight or 10 of them."

Smith said he wouldn't mind seeing a pseudo halftime at each race to cause an additional restart.

"If you have one every 20 laps, I don't care," Smith said. "It adds to the show. Someone once said we're in show business. Well, if we're in show business, let's deliver that show. Right now, we're not delivering it.

"Other sports have mandatory timeouts and TV timeouts. All that stuff creates things in those sports. We need to be creative in this sport."

Smith was asked if he has discussed his idea with NASCAR president Mike Helton.

"Maybe I did," Smith said. "Mike is a very good friend of mine and I have a great deal of respect for him. We talk to each other a lot."

NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said Friday: "We are constantly looking at ways to improve the racing. And we have mandatory cautions when we think it's needed at an event."

But those mandatory cautions usually are for safety reasons so teams can check their tires and officials can check track conditions.

Smith wants to see more race stoppages because he feels it would produce more on-track action. He also would like to see speeds reduced.

"I'd be in favor of that," Smith said. "But you have to have the cautions, even if they have to be mandatory. It's a timeout. That's what it's going to take."

SMI recently made major track changes at Bristol Motor Speedway, a high-banked, .533 mile oval, hoping to produce more bumping and banging that many fans loved at that track.

"And I've been promised (by Goodyear officials) a softer tire for Bristol in the August race," Smith said. "We need that, and yeah, we'll have it."
End Article

Absolutely shameful. Mandatory caution flags, this is not the NFL. This is still motorsports, and Smith treats NASCAR like this is a stick-and-ball sport. Caution flags like this will ruin the sport, and turn away more fans than ever before. He wants this to bring in more money for his struggling SMI tracks.

Did it ever acquire to Smith that it's the 1.5 cookie cutter tracks that are ruining the sport? The ones that he owns and runs?!?

Jesus... I would love for Humpy Wheeler to be in-charge. Also, this isn't the NFL or NBA, so stop thinking like NASCAR is one of those sports... SMH

Uh Bruton, 10 artificial 20-lap segments doesn't make for an exciting race. The last Sprint All-Star race proved that.

The Truck Series originally had halftime breaks. They stopped doing that for a reason.

People don't go to races to watch a manufactured show. If they complain about 150+ lap green flag run, I would say they're watching the wrong sport. We watch racing for the authenticity and the organic nature of sheer physics and raw competition. We don't watch it because the ringleader directs our attention to the middle of the center ring.

What did I just read.

This is motor racing. Not a ball sport. Mandatory stopping periods? C'mon, really? What next?

I read "Terry Blount" and didn't read further. I don't bother to read what he has to say half the time.

And besides, the invisibris cautions are the closest thing we have to timeouts. Nevertheless, I don't want this sport to dig itself in a deeper hole than it has now.

This article should be titled: "Bruton Smith has idea to drive even more old school fans away..."

I honestly can't take this guy seriously...either of them.

Honestly...the people involved in this article...Terry Blount and Bruton Smith...together, share less than one brain when it comes to racing sense.

Yes, racing needs to be exciting. But ask F1 fans how much this DRS thing tickles their fancy. Artificial methods are not the ticket.

Does this guy even understand that the point of NASCAR was to go fast? (Erm, faster then the law) And all motorsports for that matter.

Bruton must've been high or something. This is ridiculous. One man who owns so many race tracks cannot be this dumb.

The only reason this guy is anywhere close to NASCAR is because he's got a **** load of money, and he's got his head so far up his ass that he wouldn't know left from right.....

God please dont let dictator Bernie hear this. If he gets word of this there will be a few sc's every weekend.

If this happens in NASCAR. I will be done watching it for good. I have been a fan for almost my whole life. Just every ghing that NASCAR has done in the last ten years has sucked. The only thing I haven't minded was the cot and no racing back to yellow.

I don't like this much either, much like the Chase for the Cup being a playoff of sorts. Why is it that certain people are trying to turn our sport into a stick and ball affair? Makes no sense.

Bruton's a very savvy businessman, but he's not involved in the sanctioning body. Therefore, no matter how much money he has, all he really has is an opinion, and the best megaphone to sound off on that opinion money can by. But that's all he has. Nascar doesn't have to do what Bruton says, and won't take a silly idea like that.

This would make nascar go more in the hole. Yes the cautions are down this year its because the racing is more competitive and drivers are not running into each other. I like long green flag runs to a extent. but i hate a caution field race because its boring. Pretty stupid to go 20-30 laps and throw a yellow flag it would be like the indy race a few years ago and people were very upset about that or deal. and this is nascar not a stick and ball sport so stop trying to incorporate their rules. Ok ill get off my high horse now.

Wanna lose even more brain cells? From Candice Spencer, via Twitter:
Bruton Smith says he considers SMI's relationship with IndyCar as "strained". He says the series need "new leadership" and cars.

Seriously, screw Bruton. On both accounts.

I think Mr. Smith's wallet is getting to heavy. But all aside, he does some pretty great things for the sport. His input of his opinion, not good. Did we even ask him?

All Bruton Smith wants is money.

Every race would be like the 2008 Brickyard 400 with mandatory yellows in place.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZKFc4T-tTY"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZKFc4T-tTY[/ame]

Constant yellows don't make a race exciting, because...theres no racing during them. I hope Bruton's definition of racing is not single file behind a pace car at 70 mph. Green flag runs allow cars to pass each other and RACE (well except for Auto Club where its like watching cars on a highway). Nascar is a RACING sport. Bruton just wants to make it into a fail derp crash caution fest for the 10 years olds because cautions breed more cautions. We watch Nascar for the RACING and the thrill of it, not for 20 ft high blowovers and 25 car wrecks (well except for ARCA :p) .
