Typical Bruton. Just when he starts to calm it down, he goes and sticks his foot in his mouth.

The guy is a very smart business man, and he's obviously coming up with these ideas for his own agenda, but what a ridiculous idea to propose. He's been around racing long enough, how can he not know how absurd he sounds? Go watch WWE Bruton.

And besides, the invisibris cautions are the closest thing we have to timeouts. Nevertheless, I don't want this sport to dig itself in a deeper hole than it has now.

This would make nascar go more in the hole.

Did I miss something? How exactly is NASCAR in a hole? Yea, attendance has been down at some of the tracks, but nothing at all to cause concern. And you have to expect that with the economy being what it is. Plus, it always fluctuates to a certain extent over the course of so many years. NASCAR is nowhere near being in a hole. And hasnt been in a very very long time.

Wanna lose even more brain cells? From Candice Spencer, via Twitter:

"Bruton Smith says he considers SMI's relationship with IndyCar as "strained". He says the series need "new leadership" and cars."

Seriously, screw Bruton. On both accounts.

I have to be honest. This is one thing I can agree on with Bruton. Not to change the discussion, but damn I'm with him. I think its time to bring in some new leadership that can help the series grow and reach its full potential. 'Cause it aint happening now.

Kentucky and Charlotte aren't similar tracks so he cant really compare the two.

This is why I hate stick and ball sports. Nascar has constant and consistent action. But of-course people in suits who only see dollar signs and ratings have to try and ruin the sport we love. Bad enough we have the chase. The new points system works but I'd rather see it without the chase.

There is so many things wrong with this article.
Saying NASCAR is a "show"?????

GET THE TAR AND FEATHERS!!!

DEVON! GET THE TABLE!

In all honesty, bringing pre-race entertainment and putting more of a "show" on for his fans played a very big role in growing Bruton's company, SMI, into what it is today. Bruton Smith and his company does a better job at providing a top notch fan experience than any other track promoter anywhere.

That said, there's a very big difference between manufactured pre-race entertainment and a manufactured race. Scripting should have no place in on-track activities and Bruton Smith should know that.

This was undoubtedly something that Bruton Smith said for shock value just to get people talking about him so he can shamelessly plug all his tracks on Twitter for the next month. There's zero chance that he actually believes this... any press is good press (mostly) and nothing says "Look at Me!" like this ignorant and stupid statement. He's a ridiculous self-promoter along with Eddie Gossage and together they probably have a combined IQ of 19.

I agree, it is a very stupid idea indeed. It doesn't matter how long of a green flag run there is, there is always something exciting going on somewhere. Those that think differently are either not real fans of the sport or just don't know enough about the sport.

Wanna know how to make NASCAR better? Fix the cars, not the on-track product. Make the cars less aero-dependent, make sure the tires actually wear (but not too much). Make the drivers actually work the wheel.

I always knew that Bruton Smith was a little odd, but wanting "timeout cautions" to bunch up the field in a fake way every so many laps just to "improve" the racing? What a joke....seriously.

Like most members have said, make the cars less dependent on aerodynamics, make the tire compound so that it still provides ample grip, yet wears more than the current tires do, and change things on the car that might make it so that when you get in dirty air, you don't "hit a brick wall" and can't pass other cars.

This.

I didn't see half the people complaining about races being boring before we had the COT. The tires could use a little more wear, it would put more strategy into the sport. The only way to do good in Nascar now is to have track position and enough gas to make it to the finish. It doesn't matter how bad your car is, the fresh air will turn it into superman. That my friends, is the issue.

Also, I actually like the chase, and almost all the other rules Nascar has brought to the sport. The yellow line rule is the only one that isn't very productive in my opinion. Anyway, back to the chase. One way to somewhat go back to a season-long kind of chase, is you should make spots 1 - 10 (people who got in via points) receive 10 bonus points for how far ahead they were from 11th. For example, 10th would earn 10, 9th would earn 20, and so on until you get to the pre-chase point leader. Then you could also give 5 points for winning races (once again, except for the wildcard drivers).

I can't believe Bruton Smith thinks this is a good idea. I was at the 2008 Brickyard 400 where there was a caution every 10 laps I actually took a nap halfway through the race. I can take a late race debris caution every now and again to spice things up its fine we all know Nascar does it. But if this is put into the sport they will lose a lot of fans including this one. Such a stupid idea.

After thinking about this for half a day... it's still the 3rd stupidest thing I've seen or heard someone say this weekend!

That idea reminds me Tony's Talladega interview minus the sarcasm.

If they want more excitement then shorten the races, less laps = drivers driving desperatley. Hey, maybe we should switch to triple file restarts! They should also make it so you can only pull into your pit stall backwards! How about bonus points for every car you wreck! We totally need to see at least a few rollover crashes every race so how about we put timed releases in the shocks to they spring at a random time and flip the car over! Nah, the season hasn't been especially exciting but there is no need to turn the sport into a semi-rigged football game.

If you want excitement, just use a lottery system to determine which car gets a bomb inside it. Every race will have at least one expolsion- unless the crew defuses it in time.
