I had my hard drive "crash" a while back and that nothing could be saved from it-- or so I was told by shop #1 that worked on it. They gave me a brochure for a really expensive data recovery site. Instead, I took it to shop #2 and he said that the start up section had some bad sectors. They were repaired and I made the old hard drive into an external drive and transferred my stuff over for about $40.

Shop #1 had already installed a new hard drive reinstalled Windows XP which is what I have been using.

I can't get Carviewer to work. I dragged it from the old to the new hard drive. Everything else from the old to new seems to be working fine-- except for Carviewer. So I downloaded it brand new and it's still not working.

It's very frustrating. I get the top message first and when I click "OK" I get the 2nd.

Everything should work. I've never had to update anything to get carviewer to work before, so why is it asking me to do so now?

I'm showing that I have this DirectX version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

A friend told me that:

You need to have the Direct X SDK file where you have your carviewer application icon at, it won't work if both aren't in the same location.

I dragged the complete Carviewer folder from one drive to the other. I figured since it was working fine on one drive, it should do so on the other. I read that SDK isn't compatible with either Windows XP or my NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE video card. I know it's ancient, but it was working fine. The Carviewer program predates my videocard and XP so it should work! Also, I downloaded the program from SRD again and it's still not working.

But I extracted the files my friend sent me anyway and this time I left it sitting in the downloads folder and I'm still getting those messages.

I don't have a clue as to what got altered from the old hard drive to the new that is keeping this program from working. I mean, I should be able to download it anew, open it and it start using it. I just don't get it.

Any help with this issue?

I get the same message. I even tried reinstalling it. I don't know.

I honestly dont even know what the "SDK" is, but if its saying you need it, then it might be worth giving that a shot.

Weird issue though. I dont think I've ever seen that before.

Is the CarViewer window minimized by chance? Cause if it is, then the program won't want to cooperate at all until you drag the window big enough to show the car. (While the error screens are still there, of course.)
Once you do that, just reboot CarViewer and it should work fine.
I'm not really sure why it does that or how it suddenly works fine when the window is big enough again.

No, it never allowed me to be able to see anything. It just closed up completely.

gwoodard41 sent me his carviewer files collection and suggested:

The two things you need to keep together in the same location are the carview.exe and the dxtex.exe

I was still getting the messages posted above and gwoodard41 recommended this:

And it worked! Well, sort of anyway. I can actually see it, but it's really choppy when trying to rotate the image.

gwoodard41 also suggested updating my video card drivers which I haven't done yet, but I thought I'd post this in the hopes of helping out someone else.

I just don't get it. I never had to download other stuff to get Carviewer to work in the past. I just acquired it, opened it up, and everything worked just fine. What happened?!

I updated the drivers for my video card and now it's working. Thanks G-Dub for the suggestion. Looks like I paid the shop that worked on my machine for doing pretty much nothing as I thought updating drivers was standard operating procedure.

It's working now, but man, it cost me some valuable time!
