I guess I should have been paying more attention but I have a Chase question. I am hearing that basically if you win a race you are in the Chase. I'm not picking on Kevin Harvick but I would like to use him as an example. He wins his race, #2 on the schedule,so they are saying he is in the Chase. What if the remainder of his season goes to h*ll and he finishes 29th in points? Would he get in the Chase over other drivers who have been more consistent over the year finishing in the top 10 in points without a race win?

Yes, he get's in the chase. It's based on wins. The sixteen winners highest in points go into the chase, and then spots not yet filled by race winners go to the highest in points.

Landon Cassil can potentially win this championship

If we get 17 winners and hes the lowest in points, he wouldn't make it. Other than that, or him missing some races, hes in. This system is a bit wacky but I think its a worth while experiment.

You have to be top 35 in points, and if he keeps finishing like he is, it is a possibility.

Thanks for the responses. Although the system encourages race wins I still think there are flaws. If I were in charge for a day I would give a point for every lap completed. IMO this would make everyone race hard and offer a reward for trying to complete every lap possible

Just to clear up some misinformation, winning a race is NOT an automatic guarantee of making the Chase.

The top 15 drivers with the most wins over the first 26 races will earn a spot in the NASCAR Chase Grid - provided they have finished in the top 30 in points and attempted to qualify for every race (except in rare instances).

The 16th Chase position will go to the points leader after race No. 26, if he/she does not have a victory.

In the event that there are 16 or more different winners over 26 races, the only winless driver who can earn a Chase Grid spot would be the points leader after 26 races.

If there are fewer than 16 different winners in the first 26 races, the remaining Chase Grid positions will go to those winless drivers highest in points. If there are 16 or more winners in the first 26 races, the ties will first be broken by number of wins, followed by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver points.

For Harvick to miss the Chase this year, he'd either have to fall out of the top 30 in points, or there'd have to be at least 15 other race winners higher in the overall standings. Neither of those are too likely at this point. So while winning is not an automatic lock, it's close to one. But I wouldn't expect Harvick to slouch through the season. There's no doubt that team will want to win every race from now through Richmond if they could.

Quite honestly, I think they'd do the exact opposite. If you get a point for every lap completed, you'd see the Talladega freight train at every track. Everyone would drive so conservatively.
