General rule of thumb I use is to "squint" when designing. If I can still clearly make out the sponsors and numbers, that means there's enough separation between the object and background to clearly define it. Black passed this test after white and yellow failed to stand out. I can see what you are describing though, as some of the black streaks on the drivers' side muddle this a bit. I don't see the same issue on the passenger side (likely due to the angled direction of the number).The black door numbers don't stand out enough with the rest of the scheme imo. Have you tried white? Or maybe different outlines?
