The deal is for 13 races, down from the 22 races they have or will be on the car in 2014.

Drive to End Hunger returning with Gordon for fewer races in '15 | FOX Sports

So you have arguably the two biggest names in the sport potentially looking for additional sponsorship at the same time.

I guess the question becomes, will a current sponsor like Panasonic step up for more races or will they be finding something completely different?

Something I find interesting that nobody else has pointed out is that it's a one year deal, which will only add fuel to the fire when it comes to Jeff Gordon hanging up the helmet sooner rather than later. I'm not suggesting that's the case, but people will talk.

I was thinking they just signed a contract last year. Maybe they only sign one year at a time?

I'm pretty sure they've backed off on races since they're unsure about Gordon's plan to retire. With this news, I'm guessing Gordon will hang up the suit after next year, if he doesn't win the Cup this year and retires. Axalta will more than likely be the sponsor to step up and take those additional races. DTEH was his primary sponsor after DuPont took their name off the car, and now with the news of them leaving, I think it's inevitable that Gordon hangs it up after next year. I don't see another sponsor jumping on board when they know Gordon is going to retire soon anyways.

Axalta is signed through 2016, so I doubt Gordon retires at the end of 2015. Of course anything can happen, but I would think he's in through 2016, at least.

As far as Axalta stepping up, I would doubt that too. Dupont didn't take their name off the car, Axalta acquired ownership of Dupont. And furthermore, Dupont/Axalta has reduced their sponsorship role in each of the last couple years. So after continuously taking less and less races, I'm not sure why they would all-of-a-sudden pick up the majority of the schedule. Again, anything can happen, but the circumstances point to it being highly-unlikely.

Would love to see Pepsi take more of a front stage. His 2000-2003 pepsi cars were always so epic.

Yeah, that would be nice. My favorite one was the 2002 Pepsi 400 Fireworks scheme. I actually have the diecast of that one.

If you followed the Sponsor sign on's and post race press conferences, you know he isn't planning to retire soon. He said he might if he could win the cup this year. Keyword being "might".
There are other drivers in the cup series older than Gordon, and for some reason the newshounds and reporters don't bother them with consistent retirement questions.

If the driver says himself he will DEFINITELY retire, then you can believe it. However what is going around is speculation, and rumors. Jeff Gordon himself has not stated that he will retire soon. He was joking around (and you can tell) when he said he might retire if he wins the chase this year. I'd love it if people would stop believing the articles, and trust the drivers themselves.

Now with sponsorship, I'd love to see more of Pepsi onboard.
(Maybe if Axalta would allow it, a retro throwback scheme for one race!)

Jeff himself has said multiple times that he will continue to race as long as he's competitive and healthy enough.

The reactions will be fun to watch. And for some reason Stephen Colbert is very useful here.

But seriously, who's going to sponsor Biffle now?

I hear Roush is trying to get sponsorship from a potato farm but they are asking for too much :p

In all seriousness its good to see Hendrick quickly find sponsorship for the 24, now it all shifts over to the 88 to get him new signia. It's incredible how we're witnessing the fall of Roush right in front of our eyes.

It shouldn't be very difficult to get Jr. sponsorship, especially now that he's on top of his game and a legit title contender.

Wow 3M can't even follow their own marketing brand, #stickwithbiff. I bet Kellogg's moves to the 16.

On the other hand, 3M will have one of the best drivers in NASCAR. A company I like and trust, sponsoring perhaps my most hated driver. Guess I get to bury the hatchet, for 3M.
