How far offshore was it? 6.5 still considered small earthquake. My house shook so hard when 1992Lander earthquake hit (7.3) and it's about 120 miles from my home. It was fun!

Roughly 28,000 out of power.

Here are some photos. And this video shows the earthquake at 0:21.

This is why I always tell people in hurricane & tornado threat areas that they're the lucky ones.

They can see it coming.

Yeah what people don't understand is that when there's a hurricane or a tornado, you know where it's coming and where it might go. From there, you can say, I need to go West to get away from it.

Earthquakes are totally the opposite, they happen in the calmest of times without any warning. There's nowhere for you to go.

^ Dude...I don't want to add depression to what you're going through, but after Northridge, we had thousands of aftershocks that lasted over a period of over 5 years. Sorry to see that you may have to go through a similar experience, but at least you can be thankful that you're not going through it while being 9 years old.

Every area has their own kind of natural disaster. Tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etcetera. Definitely have to feel for the people who go through whatever type of disaster and clean up after it when it's over.

On a side note, now I see what I may have to look forward to if I ever move out to northern Cal...............

Well as said before, with tornadoes, hurricanes & blizzards, people can see the storm coming. They know approximately when it will hit & where.

An earthquake can happen at any given second. It could happen while you're asleep, while you're at work, or while you're sitting in a freeway interchange that could collapse on top of you if the quake is bad enough & the interchange's structure is flawed. It's like living in the middle of a minefield that has no boundaries, and there never is a way to really "live with it" when it comes to earthquakes. The best we can hope for is that they don't happen often, but we have absolutely no say in the matter.

I'll take the worst blizzard in history every week, over having to live with the constant threat of quake here.
