Well, you'll need a 3-D modeling and rendering program such as 3D Studio Max by Autodesk, or 3ds Max for short, which is what most of the paint crew here at SRD uses. Keep in mind, however, that 3ds Max is very expensive (it costs approximately $3,500.00, and this DOESN'T include the additional $1,000.00 or so that you'll need for the Brazil rendering program from SplutterFish).

However, there are some alternatives to 3ds Max, specifically ZModeler, and the program I use, which is called Blender. Both of these programs are free and can do most, if not all, of the operations that 3ds Max does. Blender, in fact, is not only free, but it is also open source.

You will also need a scene to render your cars. All of the scenes available for download here at SRD are for 3ds Max and require the Brazil rendering program I mentioned above. Hope this helps.

There is a tutorial on how to render cars at Simodified.com, but the only car rendering scene that's available, as far as I know, is for the Simodified Whelen Modified mod for NR2003. I haven't seen any rendering scenes for other mods, though.

There's a free version of Brazil available -- it's called Rio and you can download it from the SplutterFish site.
