This Tutorial is for people who are comfortable with the pen tool.

How to make a cool logo...
FYI- If you want to make a vector, use Illustrator, it has similar methods.
Step One
I will be making a logo for a fictional company, qualitycatering.com (not a real site), so start of by making a document 800x600, it doesn't have to be that size but it is good for a decent logo.

Step Two
The type of font that you use makes the difference between a logo that is serious or one that is more laid back. For this logo, I wanted to make it a little bit serious, but not really. I chose two different fonts and two different sizes to make it look more interesting.
Experiment yourself for a good combination.

Step Three
Now that you have your text, you CAN stop, but really? Does that look creative or cool? NO.
Proceed, now that you have your text, its time to get creative. For this company, quality catering which is a food catering company, I think it would be cool to have a symbol of some sorts. Now since it is a food catering company, I think chef hats. Now idklol, so try to GOOGLE something that is a representative of the company.
I found this, so paste it in there, and get ready to pen tool it.

Step Four
The hardest part of the whole tutorial, the pen tool part. lol
Now that you have your picture or something, outline it with the pen tool. I also pen tool'ed some of the wrinkles to make it look better.
(Notice the different layers for the paths, I'll explain later.)

Step Five
Now its time to stroke the path.
Start by stroking the outline of the hat (if your following my logo)
Fill it with a brush (at the right size/ color) and don't simulate pressure.
Next, move to the wrinkles.
Fill then with a brush (at the right size/ color) and DO simulate pressure.

Step Six
Now you have your symbol, so its time to position it. I am positioning this hat so that it is laying on top of the Q in quality.

Step Seven
Now that you have everything in the right position, its time to do a little work. Notice how since the hat is transparent, you can still see the Q? Lets get rid of that.
First you rasterize the text layer, then you simply erase the part of the text that you dont want.

Step Eight
Your pretty much done, I just added this step for final touches, I added the ".com" part, since it is a website.

Step Nine
Crop it, then...
You have made a sweet logo from scrach!
