how to merge layers in psd7

Ok if this is in the wrong mods please move it.

What i am wondering about how to merge the layers. I will make some thing for a hood and usally devide the hood in half to make sure i get a even desgin. After I like what I want I make a duplate layer and move it around to were I need it. So I will make a stroke to make the desgin stand out. Every time I do a stroke I get a line going down the middle were they meet.

So can any one help me guys.

right click on the top most layer and choose merge down

thanks for the tips guys. For some reason it didn't work. It will work if I take a texture I want to use in a pre made base. But other then that it wont work.

Never mind it works now. The layers were just not linked.
