How We Treat New Members

First: I'm not trying to start any issues. Take this as advice for the future.

This is in response to the recent issue with a certain member:

We, the SRD community, need to treat new members who step slightly out if line better than we have recently. If they break a forum rule, we can tell them kindly, and direct them to the stickied topics (which too few of us read).
If they ask a question, and we don't understand why they are asking it, we should ask them why they are asking and, if we don't know how to fix the problem they have, wait for somebody who knows the answer to reply instead of cussing them out.
We're a community, and we need to be unified in that front.

Carry on. ;)

I believe for the most part everyone is treated with respect. I have made a few requests, some filled some not but I will never bump or complain about a request not being filled. Those of you who paint are doing us less skilled folks a tremendous favor. If you want something you should take the time to read the stickies. As far as new members getting out of line I believe that most of it lies in the tone in which the question is asked. Patience goes a long way.

Respect is earned, not given. It's not surprising that when people get out of line, some of us tend to grill on him (see the spring Dover race thread...and rightfully so). As a veteran member, just don't step out of line. For new members, just read the rules, go over the stickied topics, and you'll be fine.

No offense, but you've been here for 2 and a half years and have fewer than 100 posts. I don't really think you're enough of a regular that you can really even judge how members are treated. As someone who checks in on this site on a near-daily basis, I can attest that new members are generally treated very well when they follow the rules. Take a look at the NR2003 General Discussion. Plenty of new members go there and ask questions and get polite, helpful responses because they ask patiently and appropriately. But when people abuse the forum with requests like "can you paint this list of like 30 cars", they are generally shown the door. I think you underestimate the number of people who read the sticky forums. I know that when I joined this site I read every stick about how to post on this forum, and aside from a couple of minor infractions, I've never had an issue with anything that's happened. The number of people that have posted here without issues is immense, and I can name several members that were given multiple chances as well (Fisha695, jacobc62/pennst24 etc).

I think you should definitely reconsider your post. This site has been alive for like, 8 or 9 years almost (I'm not quite sure when it actually started). If new members were really treated disrespectfully, do you honestly think that this site would actually still exist?

Ten years actually. About my post count, a. I don't see what that has to do with anything, and b. I don't feel the need to post everywhere and anywhere. I browse the forum a lot, and if something has already been covered, I don't post it. My post count will be increasing, though, as I continue updating my Showroom thread.

My point wasn't that we treat new members in general badly, I was just looking at an isolated, somewhat high-profile incident. That member was not treated kindly, nor corrected in a polite way. He was instead greeted with hostility and profanity when he was corrected (for a wrong that I do acknowledge).

Like I said, I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just seeing to it that we all know how to treat other forum members with respect. They are human, after all.

Unless anybody has something of value to add, I'm done here. Mods, you can go ahead and close this up.

Actually post count has a lot to do with things. If you are active on here you know what is going on and contribute. I'm sorry, but a guy with 250 posts and less than three years on here knows less about how the community is than someone with let's say 2,500 posts and five years. You will have the same politics, or worse, at any site in the community. Moderators and Admins don't have time, nor the patience, to handmaid through someone who has shown they either haven't read the rules or can't comprehend them. If you don't like how things are done a.) ask to become a moderator b.) do like the rest of us do and suck it up and follow the rules or c.) start your own site. There is just no excuse for being a noob.

A lot of new members come here with a sense of entitlement and a lack of respect. The maturity level they come in with gets tiring to handle on a constant repeat basis, so its not entirely unfair to sometimes take them down a peg.

Agreed, but can't we do that without insults and profanity? That's really my only point with this thread.

Lol whatever Matt. Just be nice. :p

EDIT: Oh, btw, close this up if you want. I'm done with this, looks like I did what I didn't want to do: start something. :(

I'll say this, cause I'm still scraping elements of toad off my shoe;

Respect = earned, not given.

Matt OWNS this place. Abide by his rules, don't tick him off, and don't get butthurt when you get called on stupidity.

Now where did I put the bleach?

I know that I didn't want to stir trouble when I came here in February, but I did at more than one point. I would rather get the responses that I got in that first 6 months than get a light smack on the hands, and not told what I did wrong. Many of the members may be harsh some times, but from experience, the real people will stick around after those comments, and will not try to stir any more trouble. I know I have made MANY mistakes, but I stuck through any harsh comments. The recent issue with textronix or whatever his name was proved that many people come here to take advantage of the good people here that try their hardest to make as many people happy as they can. Those harsh comments may seem mean, but they have good intentions and we need to realize it.

PEOPLE WON'T LEARN WITHOUT GETTING THEIR FEELINGS HURT!
