My mom was at a HESS station just about an hour and a half ago, and she said she was literally the last car to get gas in the station, and that as she pulled out, the lights were shut off. She might've been at your station lol.

TBH, that's completely possible lol

So far here rain and wind, supposed to pick up speed little bit later. Think of this, if this atmosphere was a bit colder, this would be a HUGE, crippling blizzard.

Here in Syracuse, NY schools began closing last night and more followed this morning. They upped the wind prediction from 35-50 MPH to between 50-65 MPH and we're still supposed to get a fair amount of rain. The grocery stores up here began running out of bread, water, milk, canned good etc. last evening.

I'm still not convinced it's going to be all that bad up this way, despite what the weathermen are saying because I've seen way too many times they've been way off on storms.

Weather up this way is cloudy and temps in the low 50's but just a calm breeze and no real sign of rain, however we're not supposed to get hit until tonight and into tomorrow (so I can at least keep hope alive my morning classes will be cancelled).

Right now it just looks like a really windy rainy day. I know its gonna be worse later, so I'm just enjoying the 'calm' right now.

Damage update for anyone out of the loop
A ship has sank off the coast off of NC the coast guard rescued 14 of the 17 reported people on board
Ocean City,MD is getting pretty beat up about half of the big pier has collapsed not sure how much flooding is going on
Atlantic City and all of NJ is getting absolutely pounded AC's boardwalks is apparently collapsed but no one is there to confirm water is coming over the sea wall and theres 2-3 feet of water in the city with the peak of storm surge still a long ways away not looking good for them

Where Im at in MD its been raining steadily since about 6 yesterday and the wind is gradually picking up had a pretty big gust about an hour ago

I can tell you the AC post is true. Parts of the Boardwalk have collapsed, and most of the Jersey Shore barrier islands are underwater.

Man I knew it was gonna get bad but this is crazy it just started we aren't even close to a landfall yet plus she looks like shes gaining strength again I think everyone might have under estimated this storm

Winds have definitely picked up quite a bit since last night here in Hunterdon County. As I type this we just had one of our biggest gusts yet. Hoping the power can hold out for a little while.

My grandparents are in Hunterdon, I'm worried they're going to get hit hard. Winds have also picked up around here, a couple of big gusts recently. Still haven't lost power for more than 5 minutes though.

Yeah we've recently had a couple noticeable ones in CA. There was a 3.9 yesterday that was centered a few miles away from where I live (Santa Clarita area). While a 3.9 isn't a disaster of any sort, it did determine that I was going to wake up at 8:25am on a Sunday. (n)

Despite the occasional erroneous claim to the contrary, earthquakes and weather are two completely different concepts. They have no real connection with each other. Quakes happen when they happen, and they can happen at any moment.

Major storms, on the other hand, can always be seen coming. That's why I seriously hope anyone on the east coast in the path of Sandy and her wintry friend has heeded the warnings and is prepared, has evacuated, and done all they know they need to do in order to safely make it through the storms. Don't squander the opportunity of time. Not all of us are so fortunate to have multiple days of forewarning before a disaster arrives.

Expecting to lose power momentarily, and I have no internet access when it goes, so this is my last post before the storm. Good luck everybody, and stay safe. I'll keep everyone affected by this in my prayers.

Right now the wind has kicked up tremendously and our first dose of heavy, driving rain is taking place. I can see the sheets of rain being blown sideways from the wind. Incredible.

As of 2:00 pm EDT, Sandy has sustained winds of 90mph at the center, with a minimum central pressure of 940 MB!!! Usually, Category 4 hurricanes have pressures that are this low. For example, in 2004, Cat. 4 Hurricane Charley had a min. pressure of 941 mb, with winds of 150 mph. This is a very unusual storm.

NYC is a ghost-town now (atleast in parts of Queens). There has been some bad flooding in coastal areas so far, but nothing too bad YET. I say yet because the worst shouldn't be here for another two hours or so.

Now there is a crane hanging from a building at 57th Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan. This is a very serious situation.
