hey guys, i need your help. i just got high speed internet wednesday, and for the past two nights, from like 7ish to 9ish, the latency has been terrible (sometimes reaching over 1000 ms!) and has made online games unplayable. any other time, it works great, and my pings are always around 25 ms. idk why it does this, but it's really annoying and i need it fixed if im going to run races online. does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how to fix this?

#1 - It depends on your internet provider. When you get high-speed internet, you're sharing bandwidth with your neighborhood. If you're using cable and get HD tv through that cable, that will take precedence over internet traffic.

#2 - Router/Firewall Configuration is your friend. Make sure that things going in and out of your computer are authorized to do so. Malware/Spyware programs can hide and run in the background sending data through your network thus slowing your overall internet.

#3 - Turn off any downloads during gaming. Most online games need the most bandwidth possible so that packets don't get mixed up. If you've got multiple computers on the network, any one of those computers could start a download and take away from your speed.

#4 - A fast download speed DOES NOT trump a fast upload speed when it comes to internet gaming. Having 10mb of download speed does you no good if you're limited to 256k upload.

So with those in mind....
- Who is your internet provider
- What type of connection is it (Cable/DSL/Wireless ie 3G,4G)
- What is the advertised speed of your internet?
- What other services do you receive from your internet provider?
- What speeds do sites like speedtest.net tell you you have?
- How many computers run on your network?
- If you have wireless, is your wireless network secure from other people connecting without your authorization?

Here is the most common problem with that.

A. you have dsl

B. you have cable and your far from a hub

If you read your ISP website they will say that internet slows down a bit during peak hours. And in fact the hours you mentioned...are peak hours. So that could be the main culprit. It's not your fault or your computers. Just a lot of people using that same hub (cable) and your far away from it or you have DSL and and it's bogged down with a bunch of users. If you live in an apartment complex, this could also weigh your speed down.

well, with what tenor said, I will provide the information.

1.) my ISP is LightningNet(rural wireless high speed provider).
2.) it is wireless high speed Internet.
3.) they claim to have d/l speeds of 500-700 Kbps and 300-500 Kbps upload.
4.) I don't use their other services, just their Internet.
5.) speednet tests usually come out with somewhere around 400 kbps d/l and 400 kbps u/l with pings around 20-30 ms.
6.) it's just my computer that's connected.
7.) yes, there is a password on my router so no one can use the connection without the password.

I think the Internet is fast. much faster than dial up! it's just during the time I need it to work it just doesn't. I think it's just the peak times up here. which sucks since it happens during my racing time. so I guess Ill have to race on dial up.. yay...
