If the Chase had to be changed..........

Alright, I know lots of people here are against the changes possibly being made to the chase. But, if you were Brian France, and you absolutely had to make changes to the chase, what would you do to make the chase better?

For me, my dad suggested this. Maybe instead of giving out points normally, the top finishing chaser gets the equivalent of the first place finishers total. If the 2nd best chaser finished 6th though, he would get the equivalent of 2nd place finishers points. And eventually, the worst chaser might finish 36th but get the 12th place finishers points. It would keep the points tightened up. Since the elimination format really happens naturally with the current points (e.g. what happened to Kyle Busch at the start of the chase in 2008), I think that the elimination wouldn't work.

What do you guys think?

Everyone starts with 0 points in February before the Daytona 500.

We race for 36 weeks, and who ever has the highest point total wins! Revolutionary, I know.






But...since in reality, as opposed to the dream world I live in with the statement above, I will give my "Chase" improvement.


1.) Back to 10 drivers. None of this top 12, 2 wild card crap. The top 10 make the stage in December, the top 10 get in the Chase. Simple. By adding more, you are further diluting the field, and might as well go back to the real points system.

2.) Reward for finishing the regular season. Like they had at the beginning, without this win bonus point crap. However, spread the margin out. 1st starts the Chase with 5250 points, 2nd gets 5200, 3rd, 5150, 4th, 5125, 5th 5100, 6th 5080, 7th 5070, 8th 5060, 9th 5050, 10th 5040. Reward the drivers for having good, consistent regular seasons.

3.) Then give them the 10 points per win to everyone. This helps to close some of the wide margins from the regular season finishing bonuses.

I would say get rid of the 100 points per win with the start. I mean for people like Bowyer or Martin, or whoever makes it and doesn't have a win, they are basically out of it from to beginning because there is a possibility of being behind 600 points at the start.

More that I think of it, the schedule more than the Chase needs changing. The schedule fits a certain driver's skill.

And we all know who this certain driver is.

The Chase needs to get dumped quicker than my ex Erica. Simple fix really. The most epic championship battle in Nascar was in 1992, with no chase. Teams just had a bit more freedom back then to work on the cars with (more gray areas in the rule book that is).

Give the crews a few more options to work on the cars with and the racing will improve, and more than likely render a chase format unnecessary.

The chase is rewarding based on wins, and some consistency. I realized the system was messed up after 2007, when Jeff Gordon was just too good for losing.

I would only change it by giving 1st in points 240, 2nd 200, and so on based on regular season position.

That's exactly why the Chase exists. Without it, there wouldn't have been any real reason to tune in for the championship run against the World Series, NFL, college football, start of NBA, etc. The Chase guarantees that there will be a tense championship battle up until the bitter end, which the sport MUST have in order to survive & compete in the sports market.

Imagine the Super Bowl being played when the NFL champion has already been crowned. Why would you watch? Imagine the World Series being played after the Yankees had already won the championship based on regular season record. What would be the point? Then, would it be a good idea for MLB to have a meaningless World Series when every other sport is drawing huge attention to themselves at the same time?

I get the purist angle, but if many purists had their way, Nascar would simply run 20 races a year in the Southeast USA and be nationally irrelevant. Is that what you all really want?

If they decide to keep it, go back to the first rendition. Seeding based on where you are after Richmond with bonus points for every win, not seeding based on number of wins.

If I had to change the chase, I would do what a lot of you are tlaking about. Keep them in position they finish the regular season and then award the wins bonus points. Sucks that Harvick has such a big lead and it will go away in 3 races and he will be in 3rd. Maybe for every 10 points you are ahead of the next guy you should get 1 bonus point.
