the paint shop in the opponents manager on shows a little corner of a template and nothing lines up, and when you 3d preview, its looks all f-d up, on all series, bullring spoiler mod pwf bgn mod and pwf cts mod. none will let me paint in game, is painting in the game obsolete now?

Yea its pretty obsolete. If your using a mod, you paint cars with a program and then import them using the 'import' button under the spinning car on the opponent manager screen, not the in game paint shop.

I'd say Photoshop since it's fairly easy to learn the basics and a lot of the templates available work for Photoshop, but there's also Paint Shop Pro, which also has a lot of templates available. Also, some people use a program called Gimp, which I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about, same as with PSP.

I'll always be partial to photoshop, but thats just me. Once you get the hang of it and learn the basics, its a great program. Then when you become a little more advanced with it, its an even greater program with endless possibilities.
Biggest thing to remember is practice. The more you practice, the better you'll get.
Just please dont do what some of these new people do like trying to paint a car in the windows paint program and just sticking a number and logos on top of the template as if its one layer. You have to utilize the layers in the template so that shading and parts come out right.

If your Short on money GIMP is great. I paint all of my things with GIMP. For the layers, go to dialogs and layers. Go down to the layer that says Base and make your base color there. then make new layers and add more stuff. ALWAYS, ALWAYS layer when your making designs and outlines. That way you can change colors easier. And be sure to use new layers for your Numbers, logos, contigencies, and that sort of stuff. Hope this helps! ;)
