who here thinks gordon should retire?
i think he should.
i mean, hes always been my favorite driver, and hes 2nd now to martin. but he just doesnt seem to have it in him anymore to win races or championships. he comes close. but hes been in some hard wrecks this year espesailly. and he has a family now. he has alot of wins, and 4 championships, and alot of drivers respect him and hes raced for quite a awhile, but i think he should retire. and his back problems too. it doesnt make it any easier for him as a driver to go out and compete with back problems. thats hard to pull off. im suprised he got that win at texas, he just hasnt been anywhere near what he used to be.

He hasn't talked about his back problems for a while.

Jeff still has it in him. He is still one of the best in the field. Little known fact: Jeff had the highest finishing average of the entire Cup series this year. That has to count for something.

Honestly, I think when he gets to the point that he just can't get in and out of the car anymore and when wrecks, even small ones, are just to much - Or racing will have to kill him. He's like Richard Petty. Mark Martin is the same way.

If JG is struggling, its not because of lack of talent and desire, its lack of crew chief.

I agree that Gordon's not as good as he was in the late 90's. Maybe the competition has improved or it might be down to the driver. Either way, it's not time to run limited schedules just yet, I think he could run til around the latter part of the next decade, then he may decide to call it a career.

Maybe he should pull a Mark Martin...it worked for Mark...lol

But in all seriousness Gordon still got some years left in the tank... I think it will all depend on if he wants to keep racing.

No way should Wonderboy retire. He's got plenty of years left in him. Honestly I don't want to see him retire anytime soon. I'm hoping he gets his 5th before Jimmie does.

I've always put #3 and #24 side by side. A lot of people pitted them against each other, but I always had mad props for both of them. I want each to have 6 champion titles.

It all depends on his back. He has been quoted to say it will be 3 or 4 years unless he has serious back issue before them. Back problems have sidelined alot of drivers before thier time.

Jeff Gordon 3 or 4 years ago would have raced until his arms fell off. since he has gotten remarried and had a child he is a different Jeff.

if gordon was always your favorite driver how come martin all of a sudden is? just cuz what he done this yr? that seems a little bandwagon-y to me. gordon still has way more in him than what he's showing i just believe he's gonna have to start realizing that nowadays he's gonna have to race alot harder like back when he first came up in order to win anything. i mean he didn't sign an extension for nothing.

I agree GordanFan. He knows he still has a fire and I really honestly think that the drivers, although they know how to drive, the COT has shuffled the field a little bit and Johnson was the best to adapt. Gordon knows he can win some more Championships and I think he should win 'em cause, although I'm an Earnhardt fan, Gordon is really good. I have respect for the guy like I do Martin and I wanna see some Championships come from his constant strive.

Here's my opinion.....

Jeff Gordon has plenty of life left in him. He's got a ton of respect, he's one of the only veterans of the 90's still with a full time ride. (Disregarding Michael Waltrip and Bobby Labonte because they are only TRYING to race full time)

C'mon, I'm not a Gordon fan at all...but hold nothing agaist him either...but you got to accept reality here. It's not JGs fault he is not tearing it up like he used too.

First of all, to live up to (24's) old stats is a tall order. Your talking amazing stats. The bar is set way high because of what (24) did in the past. Now, (24) is good but closer to human. It's hard to expect god-like numbers for ever.

Second, it's a team sport. You have to get out of your head "it's Gordon"...
It's the WHOLE team + resources + chemistry + LOTS of luck. (24) is only as good as the weakest link...whatever that might be.

This is what bothers me. Everyone likes to point to one person or issue as the "make or break" factor with a winner or loser. Everyone wants to call JJ "the greatest" or Knaus " the greatest" when it's a complete machine of parts and people working together to make it work. JJ is great, Knaus, is great, HMS has more resources, but luck is a huge factor in racing. Sometimes things just go your way and sometimes they don't. Right now, (48) has the luck that (24) had not long ago. When luck meets preperation, you get the opportunity for success...key word, opportunity. Meaning it's still not a given.

Gordon is a piece of the puzzle. He is no different than the past. As a matter of fact, he's probably better now than ever...with his experience. I am willing to bet my life he is not the weak link. He has not had all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place like he used too...but like I said earlier, that's a high performance bar to meet. You basically spoiled into thinking unrealistically because of his past awesome performances.

Yeah but that theory is flawed. What was the average age of drivers in the 90s vs now. JG was ahead of his time in the fact he was hugely successful at a young age and was full time in Cup. In the earlier 90 and before, you did not get a ride unless you proved yourself for many years in Busch. So, it's fitting drivers of the 90s are no longer around while JG is. That has nothing to with performance as it does he was racing guys 15-20 years older in the 90s.
