DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield and two crewmen have been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for violating the sport's substance abuse policy, series vice president Jim Hunter said Saturday at Darlington Raceway.

Suspended along with Mayfield were Tony Martin, a crewman on the No. 34 Sprint Cup team of driver Tony Raines, and Ben Williams, a crew member with the No. 16 Nationwide Series team of Roush Fenway Racing, which won Friday night's event with driver Matt Kenseth.

Hunter would not specify what substances were taken, but did say the violations were for more than merely alcohol use. The violations were found as a result of testing last week at Richmond.

"We have a zero-tolerance approach in our substance abuse policy, and we're going to stick with that," Hunter said. "The path to come back to auto racing is up to the individual."

The violations, Hunter said, were as a result of NASCAR's random testing policy, which went into effect this season.

Mayfield, 39, is a five-time winner on NASCAR's premier circuit. He is currently operating his own race team. "He is suspended as an owner and a driver," Hunter said. "His team could be operated by somebody else, but Jeremy will not be allowed to participate."

The offenses are not appealable, Hunter added.

Jeremy just doesn't seem like a guy who would dope.

Good move. Taking banned substances is not the path to success anywhere, especially NASCAR.

That said, I'm not sure I like how this is "not appealable". It's very rare, but occasionally drug tests are not accurate. It's even rarer that there are mitigating circumstances that could affect the outcome of the drug test, but it is possible. Just doesn't sound like Mayfield's receiving any kind of due process here.

Can't they investigate this during his indefinite suspension? Or is the idea here to investigate while he's suspended indefinitely, and bring him back if something is found to negate the test results?

I guess Jeremy said that he got a perscribed medicine and an over-the-counter medicine and I guess it resulted in a positive drug test.

You've gotta be careful, even poppy seeds on dinner rolls can result in a positive test.

yeah I saw that on myth busters...I don't know but they need to tell us what he was "positively" tested for then go from there.
