UDPATE 2 Kasey Kahne will drive a Red Bull Racing Team Toyota in 2011, the team announced. "We were fortunate to have the opportunity to hire a very talented driver for the 2011 season and we took it," said Jay Frye, Red Bull Racing Team Vice President and General Manager. "This is a unique situation that doesn't happen every day. Kasey is a perfect fit for our company, team and Red Bull." "This opportunity places me with an established, competitive team that has proven they can win races and make the Chase," Kahne said. "I have great respect for Red Bull, so to have the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing Team in 2011 is a great fit for me, both personally and professionally. It feels good to be able to finally put this to rest and focus my energy on finishing the season strong for the 9 team and our sponsors." "This obviously all happened very quickly," Frye added. "Over the next month, we will finalize the specific team details."(Red Bull Racing PR)(8-10-2010)
UPDATE 3: Statement from Rick Hendrick: "Kasey is going to a competitive organization that made the Chase last season and has great leadership and resources," said Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "Of everything we looked at, he and I agree it's the best opportunity for him to be successful in 2011, which was always our number-one priority. The process went on longer than any of us anticipated, but I'm glad that we took our time to make sure it was right. And although I'm not looking forward to racing against him next year, I'm comfortable knowing this is the best situation for Kasey." As announced in April, veteran Mark Martin will continue to drive Hendrick Motorsports' #5 Chevys in 2011. "We're looking forward to another year with Mark Martin, one of the true class acts in racing, driving for Hendrick Motorsports," Hendrick said. "There aren't many things in this world I'd rather do than win a championship with him, and that will be our goal with the #5 team for the rest of this year and in 2011."(Hendrick PR)(8-10-2010)

To be honest...and trying to be impartial, as a Scott Speed fan...

I really don't see how TRB would have made this deal...one year and done with Kahne...unless they thought Vickers needed more time to recover. I don't think any team would knowingly hire a driver and invest the time money and energy into him, if they knew that they would only get one year out of him before he moved on to greener pastures. The only way this TRB deal makes sense would be if Vickers was sidelined for 2011, as well, and Kahne would fill his shoes, while he waits, in limbo, for the 5 to open up.

If TRB wanted to get rid of Speed, they would have looked for someone to fill his seat, and to build a lasting relationship with to build up their program...not a one and done deal, wherein they have to find a new driver for 2012, and restart the building process.

Just my two cents, but I think this means, God forbid, BVick may be out for another year, or done as a Cup driver all together.

@Mike 24

Who else would they put in there car next year? Look at the Free Agency list. Sadler would be the only option besides Kahne that could get the job done and Sadler prolly already has something signed for next year, but there keeping it quiet til offseason.

It all falls into place perfectly for Mark to come there in 2012 either in the 82 or in a 3rd car.

I'm sure Mark Martin is done after the 2011 season. But I'm honestly a little worried that BVick may be done now. I don't see TRB getting rid of Speed since he fits the look and attitude of what they want for image, and so the only other two possibilities that I see happening are either a 3rd car (maybe the 84 again?) or BVick being out for another year.

Mark won't go to Red Bull. It's kinda obvious.

He doesn't exactly fit the TRB image...young, hip, wrinkle free...

Could you see Mark out until 3 in the morning drinking Red Bull and partying? Don't think so...thats the image TRB portrays.

Youth, European-esque in style, and trendy...

He didn't exactly fit Kelloggs and Go Daddy either lol.

As long as Marks in solid equipment, I'd be happy to see him anywhere. Also as a Kahne fan, I'm extremely excited to see him in Red Bull equipment. They are much more organized and competitive then RPM in my mind.

Ya that explains why Ken Schrader drove the 82 in the Bud Shootout. Because he's so "young and hip."

Mike is right. Red Bull like their athletes to fit an image. Look at how involved they are in the extreme sports world, and how often they have their athletes jumping out of planes and similar activities. Ken Schrader was a one off deal, he never did press for RB and only drove the car because he was the only eligible driver they could find.

As for Kelloggs and Go Daddy....do either of them have 100 or so athletes in various sports representing their brand?

You guys are forgetting that Red Bull Racing was thinking of adding a third car with regular sponsorship not Red Bull.

Good point. Had not heard that rumor, but if it is true, that would be the best thing for all parties involved.

1. It means BVick may be able to come back as scheduled in 2011.
2. Speed still has a ride.
3. Kahne has a ride for 2011 before leaving for the 5 in 2012.
4. TRB can get a third team established, and in motion, with an experienced, talented driver...which would give them a head start for 2012 when they would ultimately put the driver that they want to move forward with for the foreseeable future, in the ride.

Everyone wins! :)
