Evening all, so in June I'll be heading to sea for what could be eight straight months. I've decided that this is the best time to replace my aging and almost continually overheating laptop. I have a budget of £500 about $850 . I play only two games, an aging hockey management game NHL Eastside 07 and NR2003. Ideally I'd like something that could run NR2003 to a decent spec and framerate as I'm tired of lurching around at 15FPS or 25 in a world devoid of features.

What I've been looking at is this:
Lenovo G505s, 59408360

It has a dedicated graphics card and decent processor speed. However, it's quad core and NR2003 is from a single core generation. As I understand, NR2003 only utilizes a single core so I'm not sure quad is better than dual core for the purposes of NR2003. I need something durable as well as I'll be trekking around airports and ashore a fair bit. Really I'd like something that can run the newest mods on higher end resolution and settings at at-least a steady 30FPS. Any suggestions or recommendations?

At a quick glance, it looks alright.

2GB of dedicated Graphics Memory, but the CPU could be a bottleneck. You'll want to overclock it to 3.0GHz (which should be easy, as it supports TurboBoost up to 3.5GHz). Just know that heat will not be your friend and you might want to consider a cooling pad or similar to keep the temps down.

Well I'm no stranger to cooling pads as I have one for my current laptop. Not the easiest thing to transport mind. I didn't actually consider the CPU issue. How much processor speed does NR2003 require, my current laptop has 2.1gHz and is constantly overheated and has poor gaming performance (it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card mind).

NR2003 only uses one core, so a quad core processor won't matter. What I've seen recommended from the veterans here is at least a 3.0GHz clock speed. I currently have a 3.4GHz quad core CPU with 8GB of RAM and a 1GB GPU playing at 1920x1080x32, and I easily get 60 FPS at the back of the field. With a 2GB GPU, and an over clocked CPU, it should run NR2003 fine.
