Is there a tutorial on layers, I have a program and open the template and pallet but can't figure out how to change color, only the body, but nothing else. any help is appreciated

On most templates, the very bottom layer will be what you will paint on to change the base color of the car, usually named "Base" or "Base Color", etc. You could look at some painting tutorials here at SRD, and I should have a few more up soon. Just a note, the process will be different with whichever program you choose to use.
