Concord, N.C. (February 26, 2013) - After further evaluation by two different doctors in North Carolina, it has been determined that Richard Petty Motorsports driver Michael Annett has suffered a fracture and dislocation of his sternum. He will immediately undergo surgery for his injuries in Charlotte. He suffered the injury as a result of an accident during Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series event in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Annett will not be able to compete for an indefinite amount of time as he heals from the surgery. Richard Petty Motorsports driver Aric Almirola will drive the No. 43 Pilot Flying J Ford this weekend at the Phoenix International Raceway as the team evaluates its options moving forward.

Richard Petty Motorsports' primary concern is the health of Annett and getting him the proper treatment he needs for a full recovery.

Wish him a quick recovery!

Dang, he was a serious Championship contender this year. I wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he gets back soon! I wonder who they will call on to drive in the #43 when Almirola isn't. I foresee Josh Wise or Erik Darnell.

A true shame to hear. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to the day that he can return behind the wheel of his #43 Pilot Mustang.

Can somebody explain to me how neither the infield care center nor Halifax Medical Center were unable to diagnose this? I mean, Halifax even did scans....Absolutely Unacceptable.

This means Annett walked around all Monday with a broken sternum.

Best wishes to him.

They probably did diagnose and referred him to his own doctor but Annett and/or the team wanted to wait until all the details were worked out before announcing the extent of his injuries.

I hope Annett can get back in his car quickly he's one of the better Nationwide drivers out there. But damn, Saturday was a bad day for the NASCAR world.

When was the last time someone scanned you for a broken sternum during a checkup? There's your explanation right there.

This is not Star Trek where the Doc waves this little device over the body and can instantly tell anything wrong. They do a basic checkup and if they find nothing, and the driver has no complaints, that's it. Then later Annett complains about pain, and they look into it further. Where's the outrage here?

Sad news for Annett, but I'm sure he's getting some good natured ribbing from this. He'll get it together soon, and he'll be back out there when he does.

Plus it's not like a "fall off your bike and get a scrape" type of accident where your injuries are obvious and pain is imminent. Anyone who has been in a moderately bad car accident will hear me out on this. The day after the accident is the worst. Your body has settled and there isn't adrenaline running through your body to mask the pain. It all shows the day after.

If it was a just an infield care center check-up, I'd totally understand that being missed....however, he spent saturday night in Halifax and underwent a CT scan....

As I said before, RPM and Annett probably wanted to wait until all the details were known and a driver was found for Phoenix before announcing or saying anything. A lot of times (at least in my numerous past experiences) they'll do x-rays and scans and diagnose BUT then refer you to your own doctor or a specialist for a further or more complete evaluation.

Damn, thought the 43 was gonna be a contender. But more importantly glad it was found and not ignored before he strapped in a car again. What a way to start off the season, bummer.

The way the points work in Nationwide...he'll probably still finish in the top 10 for the season.

This week Reed Sorenson will be in the #43, at least, for Vegas.
