The starkest contrast between NR2003 and a game like EA's NASCAR '09 is the audience playing it.
We all love NR2003 because of its realism that, among other things, won't let you mash the throttle from a dead stop without massively spinning the rear tires. We love being able to sit with our wheels and whatever else, race a full-length race with all the strategies, names, faces, and even billboards exactly what we would see if we turned on the TV today. We love it so much that that's what we expect from these car painters and track builders that have kept this game alive for us.
EA's audience is the complete antithesis of that kind of crowd. They want to turn off their NBA Streetballer game, pop in their NASCAR game, and take a checkered flag after racing for maybe 15 minutes without having one pit stop or caution flag. Well, maybe one caution flag, gotta have that massive crash with no less than 5 cars flipping out of control.
They'll make the race cars feel like faster versions of the family sedan, and include tons of juicy loudmouth interviews and a few garage area fights. That stuff's necessary, because as we all know, the game would be so boring without that! Now combine that with some high-priced licenses like all the trademarks from the media, as well as some sound bytes from real drivers, and EA has a real money maker on their hands.
Keep in mind, NR2003 racers and content contributors are NOT doing what they're doing for money. EA is ONLY doing what they're doing to make money. That's their one main concern. So, the contrast continues and will probably always be while the realistic and high quality racing sim is NR2003, the gamers' game and the game for anyone who can press the A button to make the car go is what EA sports makes.
