You have to appreciate anyone wanting to offer resources to the community, and they seemed to have a lot of bases for those who can't make their own. And I definitely sympathize with anyone who gets their work ripped (if that's in fact what was happening - I can't assert it one way or another, as I didn't "investigate" it in any way). It drives me nuts when people jack others work because they're too lazy to do some work themselves. And even worse, when they jack others work and sell it for profit (like the Pattos of the world). Its the epitome of being a lazy opportunist.
That being said, it seems like NDG wasn't exactly doing themselves any favors with some of their practices and/or subsequent hostility. I think David hit on it:
It seemed like they were trying so hard to "create" a community with a lot of traffic (sometimes almost seemingly demanding discussion of some sort), by requiring forum posting to download files, and even scrutinizing the substance of the posts (not wanting "useless" or "spam" posts that are made just for the sake of reaching post-count for downloading). But that's exactly what you're inviting by instituting that kind of practice. You can't force a community to form and/or grow. That's totally an organic process, and it either happens or it doesn't.
That kind of practice just doesn't work, and it never will. And if that's your motivation in this kind of community, then you're probably doing things for all the wrong reasons. In this type of hobby/community, you have to do things because you enjoy them. And if you want to offer your work to the masses, you have to offer it because you want to. Simple as that. Once you start trying to over-regulate everything, you've lost sight of the end-game, and ultimately, it doesn't really end up being beneficial for anyone (including yourself).
That's nothing against NDG personally, just my observations over the past 7-8 years.

I think they pretty much dug themselves a nice deep hole requiring registered members to post in the forum to download files. That's just asking for spam.
