I tend to agree with this. I got hooked because my mom was flipping channels trying to find something to shut me up (I was like, 2) and a Winston Cup race did the trick. My mom got into it because of me and she still watches whenever she can.

(Also, I don't really care that much about a new title sponsor)

Money's money. I don't care if PornHub sponsors the Cup series, if they're putting cash into the sport I love I'm all for it.

I've watched Nascar since 1986. Never once have I care who the title sponsor is. As long as cars are on the track, I'm happy.

You do have a point, but then I would argue that video games and movies are drastically different than overhauling the entire championship format multiple times. I was drawn in by a video game too (NASCAR Thunder 2003)... I mean, they're all gimmicks but it's kind of apples and oranges. Movies and video games are completely external to NASCAR, whereas the gimmicks I'm talking about are actually affecting the product on Sunday afternoon.

Very fair point. Though I'm sure there were people back in the 90s that thought of a NASCAR Movie and NASCAR video games as pretty radical gimmicks of the time. Also IIRC NASCAR came up with the Chase format because of the whole "Matt Kenseth won the championship without ever winning a race" controversy, and it kind of just ballooned into what it is now over time. I definitely get the hate for the chase and its bastard incarnations, but I kind of feel like they are at a point where there is no going back, and they are just trying different things to make the best of it.

Nascar isn't dying. It's becoming a niche sport. That's how things are now. Everything's a niche. Everything's a fandom. Pop culture transcends this still, but Nascar has never been wholly accepted by pop culture and probably never will be.

Stick and ball sports have a regional and generational legacy that won't break unless those who head them up pull a Nascar and invent a bunch of new stuff that doesn't seem like the legacy the viewers valued. MLB keeps flirting with that with silly rules like starting extra innings with 2 guys on base or whatever but fortunately rational minds prevail.

I think the legacy of the Chase is ultimately going to be Nascar attempting to compete in a ratings competition that they weren't really ever legitimately in. It could go away tomorrow and I really don't think much would change. Corporate executives earning millions in salary and bonuses for coming up with new stuff will never see it that way though.

When monster stepped in... there was the big press conference before the season started. They were talking about radical changes on the horizon and how people would respond...

“The fans will learn to like it.”

That’s literally what was said. Peace out monster.

I do agree with the fact that There are a ton of stubborn fans in the world of nascar. Who will gripe on everything. Most don’t realize that all these changes have been made in recent years because of their own griping.

However, it’s a slippery slope. The folks that go to races often, are people that have been going to races for years and years. Maybe their dads and moms took them and those memories are instilled with them. I feel like there’s a lot of that in some races fans. Going to a race is a way to enjoy yourself but also honor your past memories.

A sponsor needs to talk respectfully towards the fan that’s been going to races for one year or 50 years...

For a lot of folks its big money to head out to a race, it’s usually something that’s planned out in advance... with some traveling involved.

Most times I’ve gone to races, there would be atleast a few hours of driving early on race day. The person who goes to a random ball game is not always the same person planning out a weekend of driving to invest in a race.

Little things like this, are BIG things. A sponsor needs to be mindful of how the fan who’s been putting that money down on hotels, multiple gas station stops, food stops... all for a weekends race. A race fan who goes to races is a special breed of fan. They are investing a good penny to put themselves and their family there

If someone comes into this sport, even if they have few intentions of listening to the “old guard” don’t dare insult them in public doing a press conference. You need that fan to care. Just as much as you need your name all over this series.

Great, now maybe we can eventually have those years and years of archived paint schemes back.

EDIT: Ignore me, just occurred to me that I could use the WayBack Machine

The carousel portion was announced last year, they just hadn't decided on whether they were going to change the distance as a result or not, which they ended up doing...

Yep, this is how lol. 20 years is a bit of an exaggeration I'll admit, but by not much at all. My dad has been a fan for years and years and he brought me up to like it. It was more casual up until about seven years ago, but growing up I still had my crop of favorite drivers, I still have a ton of 1:64ths that were bought for me growing up, some dating back to '98-'99, I also very vaguely remember having a Dale Earnhardt bib. I've been a fan as far back as I can remember.

I'm not sure if the information is out there, and there would have to be inflation factored in obviously, but I'd be genuinely curious what the cost of a Bristol ticket and nearby hotel room was in 1999.

This ticket for the 1999 fall race on eBay was $70. I honestly don't know if it's a decent seat or not.
