NASCAR Gets New HD Instant Replay System - 2011-12-12 19:53:49 | Broadcasting & Cable
I still don't understand why they don't just use the tv cameras. It does sound like a cool system though. What do ya'll think?

They wouldn't be able to see anything once ESPN took over. (I'm joking, simmer down, children)
These angles are probably in a better place for officials to have more detailed views of the track. Spotting debris and assessing on track penalties will probably be easier with these angles opposed to the standard TV shot.

Oh they don't have problems spotting "debris". Still a cool system.

It's reports like this that make non-NASCAR fans say "What, NASCAR didn't even have instant-replay? What a joke!"

720p is still considered high res? I thought 1080p was the new gold standard for that now, or am I confusing HD with broadcast HD?

What is this exactly going to do? It's not like a crew chief could throw a challenge flag and challenge the driver's position at the finish line, so why bother having this? In all honesty, the track is pretty much covered by the TV cameras. Very rarely is there something that is completely missed. Often, the cameras only catch part of something, but for the most part, the TV cameras are enough.

He said VERY RARELY...that's one of those rare occasions where cameras missed the incident completely.

Elliott Pocono Sadler

That and the Joey Logano/Juan Montoya incident at Homestead 2010, although that was under caution. Those are the only ones I can think of from years of watching NASCAR. Sounds pretty good to me...
