In having trouble making the black behind the number. Not sure what to call it a fade?

Looks more like they blurred the heck out of it to me.

You might be able to duplicate something like that in Inkscape and then port it over to your template.

I know how to do it in Illustrator. What program are you using? That's actually easy to do it's just shapes with gradient black to no opacity. Here is a screenshot how to do it in photoshop.
