I think having two titles is stupid. No ifs ands or buts. Why on earth merge them then? A few reasons because both were run like crap, poor series sponsorship and generally are boring judging by the Indy 500 turnouts and the number of viewers for its races. That said. I do believe IZOD is doing a good job trying to market the series. They need to turn it up several notches like Sprint/Nextel did when they took over the cup series.
You either are or are not a well rounded driver. With two separate Championships I say not. Just split into 2 series if their are going to be 2 titles. But this does further lend credit to just how much better a class of driver the NASCAR boys and girls are then the IRL boys and girls.
The IRL folk have perfectly tuned airplanes on wheels at 230 mph usually going left continually and dont actually have to man handle their cars like the Cup guys. A nascar championship requires discipline on both. I know we only have 2 road course and I feel there should be more. But you cant just throw them out the door if you want to be the champion you do have to do more then just survive their. And the same is true with the IRL if they were under one unified championship.
They are still under 1 championship....The overall title is still the one that counts. These are just to give people who cant win the title overall (Tagliani, Power, Andretti etc.) a chance at something. (more like a road or oval Mvp award tbh.)
As for your second 2 paragraphs. Comparing drivers in the two disciplines is just a waste of time. Both are incredibly talented for separate reasons. Throw a Nascar driver in the IRL it would take him several seasons to be up to speed, and vice versa. Look at Montoya, arguably the most talented driver in the world over the last 10 years, and it took him 3 seasons to be up to speed.
