It was frustrating to see Gordon have the pit road issue with the front tire changer missing the lugnut, but I don't believe all is lost for this #24 team. For the second weekend in a row, Gordon showed speed in practice and qualifying. Poor track position and an ill-timed caution after Gordon stayed out and restarted 2nd killed the race at Pocono, and a pit road mistake along with the rain killed this one today. Yeah, Gordon doesn't seem to be able to wrap his head around this package just yet, but these last two weeks on the practice charts have given me somewhat of a good future outlook for this #24 team. Still a lot of great tracks out there before the Chase that Gordon can win at, including the next one at Sonoma. Hopefully these strong showings in practice continue and this #24 team will wind up putting together a full race.
Also, how about Trevor Bayne getting a top 10 today? Yeah it was rained-shortened pit strategy that made the difference, but Trevor looked to have a very solid car today. Anytime he would come in to pit and fall out of the top 25, he would quickly turn it back around and find his way back inside the top 20. I think that ARCA win at Pocono helped him immensely. I imagine it probably boosted his confidence, and it's led to a decent 24th-place effort at Pocono and a 9th-place effort here today. I'm excited for this #6 team today. To me it almost feels like a win.
