I'm replacing a rumble strip texture at Watkins Glen (the 2010 updated version) with one from a screenshot from NTG11. I used winmip2 to change the curbing.mip from a .mip to a .bmp, edited it, saved it, turned it back into a .mip in winmip, put it in the unpacked glen trackmat folder, overwrote, and then packed it all up. Then in game it gives me the fatal "Cannot Load Track" thing. Can anyone figure out what I did wrong?

Put the original mip back in and try it.

If it works, you know it's your mip that's the problem.

Still doesn't work. I copied the track file as to not overwrite it. I left it as it was, a perfect copy of the track, but that doesn't work either. I tried renaming it in the .ini thinking there might be a problem with duplicate tracks, but it still doesn't work...

Save me!

You never need to repack the track. You saved it with the exact same settings as the original mip right?

Yup. I didn't know you didn't have to repack... Could that be the problem?

Couple things:

  • Did you put the mip in the "trackmat" folder?
Anything that covers the track must be in the trackmat folder. That gets packed into the DAT file, so you WILL have to extract the DAT file and put it in that folder. Then you can repack it and put the newly made DAT file back in the track folder, or you can just put the trackmat folder in the track folder.

  • Are you sure the filenames are the same?
The file names must be the EXACT same. You'll have to get the overwrite warning. If the strip on the track is set to rumblestrip.mip in Sandbox, it must be replaced with a mip named rumblestrip.mip .

  • Is the .mip the right size?
Mips must be exponents of 2. (Or some mathmatical term like that.) IE 128, 256, 512, 12024, 2048. Width and height must be one of those numbers. They don't have to be the same, but they must be one of them.

Hope this helps.

The track loads now, I've replaced all of the mips, but the track still shows the origional .mip. Am I missing a step here? This is starting to give me a headache.

Send me the a file of the mip you want to put on the track and I'll give it a look and see if I can figure it out.

Also, can you provide a download link to the track?

Sure. The .mip isn't perfect but it's just a quick thing I threw together. I'll give you the .bmp and the link to the track:

Under "Road Courses" near the bottom.

Thanks!

iirc there were about 3 files that covered the curbing textures.
(oh scrub that, I thought you were talking about my WG2010)

Yeah yeah, I'm talking about the non-boot version. I like your curb textures! :D
