I still can't believe they are reforming. Makes you wonder how if at all this would have effected the careers of people like Tony Stewart, and a bunch of other open wheelers if this would have happened sooner doesn't it ?

What do you guys think about this ?

For the good of open wheel in the U.S. and the rest of the world, IRL and CART finally merge. CART was good until everyone started passing to IRL, castroneves, kannan, franchiti and so on... and that was when IRL ruled american open-wheel.
what if they had merged before?
I think open-wheel would be closer to compete with NASCAR or F1 with all the international drivers they had.

Mmmm....could this be because they're loosing alot of the best drivers to NASCAR?

This merger is too long in coming, I hope it works out, I mean...come on only18 cars on the track per race. Barely getting a 33 car field for the Indy 500!

Who knows maybe I'll start watching again.

This has been a long time coming. I guess they finally figured that both CCWS (all but dead), and the IRL (wasting away), were not going to make it too much longer on their own with the diminished fan base and the exodus of their big name drivers.

Good for them, good for open wheel racing in America. I see nothing but positives for this move on both sides.

I agree with you guys that only good things will come from. I used to watch CART and IRL religously back in the day before I got into NASCAR. I was shocked when I learned just how bad financially things got for both series.

Guess I'm still living in the glory days of Alex Zanardi,Tony Stewart,Jimmy Vasser,Team KOOL.

I agree 100%

2 words: ABOUT TIME!

I couldn't have said it better myself. After the split occurred in '96, I pretty much gave up on open-wheel racing, with the exception of the Indy 500. I've always been a NASCAR fan, but now that the IRL and CCWS are back together, maybe I'll start watching open-wheel racing again.

I just hope that it isn't too little, too late.

this has been too long in the waiting for sure, lets pray they get it right.
they will rise above F1 (considering how boring f1 is) and be be back where open wheel racing belongs, as a great sport to watch (along with nascar) and my other favorite V8 supercars.

I'm glad to see it finally happened, however the WRONG guy is running the show. Tony George has been, is now and always will be concerned solely on what he can put in his own pockets! Also, as long as they spend the majority of the season chasing their tails on ovals the fan base will never improve since the majority has never heard of most of the CCWS drivers.
Lets' just hope that tracks such as Portland, Cleveland and Road America are added quickly.

Hmmm... I'm still waiting for the Champ Car, IRL, and Nascar merger. LOL. *just joking* :)

Actually, I'm very glad this is happening. I saw it on the bottom line on ESPN and was stunned. I'm surprised the rest of the sports world isn't making more of a big deal out of this. This is HUGE news IMO. :)

This only makes it harder for Danica to actually win a rice though right? LOL. *just joking* :)
