Tony Stewart is being transported to a local hospital for further observation, but we want to stress he was AWAKE and ALERT.

Damn safety in the Sprint Cars. This is very, very bad. Where are the DAMN SAFER Barriers in the Sprint Cars racetracks?

Sigh...this is why I think that NASCAR drivers should focus only on their respective sport during the season. Stuff like this ends up happening, and depending on the situation, can prove fatal (RIP LEFturn) under the worst circumstances.

Hopefully Tony is ok and can race at Watkins Glen this weekend (which he should, barring some kind of injury that is severe enough for him to not race).

I think its time tony decides to race something else on dirt. (Super Late Model). I really dont see dirt tracks putting up Safer-Barriers i for one dont think their needed. Just wish that they could make sprint cars safer but theirs really no way to make them anymore safer.

These guys are pro drivers. They know the risk these are grown folks if they wanna race they can race as much as they please. As for safety Im not sure what else you can do to these sprints this has just been a tough year. Hope he is alright.

Since I've read some tweets about it, Jerry was told by an official that Tony Stewart has a compound fracture in his leg... Yikes!!

I'm no doctor, but if it's a compound fracture (bone protruding out the leg), I doubt he would have even limped away from that.

Either way, whatever is ailing him will hopefully have a speedy recovery and if Brad Keselowski can recover from a bad wreck and win the following weekend, Tony Stewart can definitely do it on his best track.

Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart left the Southern Iowa Speedway in an ambulance Monday night after being involved in a four-car wreck that sent his sprint car tumbling.

Stewart was leading the 30-lap feature of the Front Row Challenge with five laps remaining when Josh Higday’s car spun on Turn 4 and collected the top three cars – Stewart, Tasker Phillips and Tony Shilling.

Track officials said Stewart was conscious and talking to responders after being placed on a stretcher. Track officials and several drivers indicated that Stewart suffered a leg injury. A member of his pit crew member declined to comment.

Brian Brown raced to victory, holding off Kyle Larson after the restart.

This season, Stewart won the FedEx 400 at the Dover International Speedway on June 2, took second in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona on July 6 and placed fourth at the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis on July 28.

He was scheduled to compete Sunday in the Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen.

Man, I hope he's alright. Sucks to see all the drivers hurt/killed while racing Sprint cars this year.

Anyways, I bet that if he can't race @ WG this upcoming weekend, he'll put Terry Labonte in his car since he's not entered for anybody else.

Just for the record, a compound fracture doesnt necessarily mean the bone is actually protruding out the skin, it just means the skin barrier has been broken, and therefore, the bone fracture is susceptible to bacteria/infection.

Also, for what its worth, its not all that uncommon for some people to confuse the term "compound fracture" for "multiple fracture".

Nonetheless, he very well could've been limping on either type fracture. Adrenaline can temporarily numb you and make you do some pretty incredible things. That being said, all we have is some vague details coupled with some speculation and word-of-mouth, so who knows what the deal is.

According to reputable NASCAR reporters on Twitter, the team has confirmed he has a broken leg and has had surgery on it.

As far as the limping away goes, I've seen that he limped away and I've seen that he extricated from the car but yes adrenaline can make you do crazy things...I know this from experience XD

Please excuse the stupidity but its 3:30AM here, what does that mean? I have a gut feeling he is going to be out for a bit. I read that those kind of injuries take around 12 weeks to fully heal depending on severity.
