The J.D. McDuffie wreck is why they installed the inner loop/bus stop loop. For the most part it works to slow the cars down enough to get through there.

Exactly what I was going to add. Unfortunately it always takes a death (McDuffie) to add more safety...but Watkins Glen is one of the safest tracks on the circuit. Only thing they should do is find a way to re-angle that wall coming out of the carousel.
Watkins is (mostly) fine as it is, it is a unique course, I'm glad that it's on the schedule, not just because of its history, but because it's a fantastic track to drive.
Don't forget that Kendall's crash happened at the exact same area as McDuffie's, but nobody remembers TK's, even though it was also a factor in the bus stop being built.
The only feasable safety modification is moving the barrier or angle
I think Nascar doesn't have to change anything. Especially with the COT being safer, if it was in the car of 2006 then we might have seen jeff gordon injured this week
Exactly, If it was F1 you'd see chicanse every 20 feet. No joke, remember what they did to Imola (Off topic, but I think modern F1/other series could safely use the pre-1994 layout)?
Also I doubt other series/management would want any hypothetical changes, think purely based on cost, also the track's had a history based on being one of the most challenging tracks in the country.
