An athlete is someone who's doing physical sports with hand and feet, e.g. someone WHO has to Run, jump, lift weights, throw....

But drivers, sailors,...are moving by the vehicle, boat....

Seriously, just search for what's an athlete....you won't find race drivers or sailors...and this isn't bad, it's just their sports has different naming for them.

Think what you want but the fact of the matter is,
drivers are athletes, some of the best in the world as a matter of fact.
I don't really understand why you're on a racing forum if you don't even have enough respect for the sport and the athletes in it to even call them athletes.
I certainly hope if you could you wouldn't tell Earnhardt
along with many others that they wern't athletes when they died.

Also didn't Jimmie Johnson win the ESPY for 'Athlete of the year' in 2011?

If you still don't believe drivers are athletes and you still think that football players are the high and mighty supreme athletes of the world...

You probably don't belong here.

I searched "athlete" in Google, there was not a single football player on page 1 if you're claiming that's the "most athletic" sport.

I always thought is took hands and feet to race a car but I guess I was wrong. :-/

What is "search" search where? So many people have so many varying opinions on things. And why not answer our question of who/what is the authority on if someone is an athlete or not?

Guys, I do respect drivers and racing, that's why I love racing too.And I wouldn't have a problem to call them athletes, they with no doubt have to work out like other athletes, maybe not as intesive as a football player or olympic runner, but keepin the body very fit!

The thing is, I never heard in my entire life, that drivers are also athletes.

Again, this isn't meant disrespectful, not at all...I always thought (and not only me, I asked ma team and other friends) that it's 'just' race drivers, because it explains racing and that they need a physical fitness...

Really? The second picture in google has football players, basketball palye,r baseball player, volleyball player and runners oni it.
and then http://www.squadlocker.com/Portals/231999/images/ncaa_student_athletes_payment.jpg

so...

I always thought is took hands and feet to race a car but I guess I was wrong.

hand and feet as for running, throwing, cheerleading...

high and mighty supreme athletes of the world

Yes, I still think and believe that, but don't get me wrong....I didn'tknow race drivers are named athletes too... racing sure isn't a candy shop, neither is football.´

Racing and Football are great examples of what risks they take!

Just to clarify, here are my results in an attachment. I just don't understand why you're here if you just wanted to argue that they aren't considered athletes. Every response from you got more and more vague as you tried to keep your reasoning. I think it would be safe to say at this point,

we have convinced you that racecar drivers are athletes, and they very much are in the same breed as any other athlete. An athlete is an athlete, and as defined by every definition I can find, racecar drivers are athletes.

At this point I am confident in saying that if you don't consider racecar drivers athletes, and auto racing a sport, you're wrong. Just as wrong as if I said football wasn't a sport.

Who cares? Just because you haven't heard doesn't make it not so. What about way back when no one had heard that the world was round, does that mean that it wasn't? The point is racers are athletes with or without it being well known.

Really? The second picture in google has football players, basketball palye,r baseball player, volleyball player and runners oni it.
and then http://www.squadlocker.com/Portals/231999/images/ncaa_student_athletes_payment.jpg

so...

The thing is not everyone's search results will be the same because Google uses a lot of things including the person's browsing history.

hand and feet as for running, throwing, cheerleading...

Does that mean cheerleaders are athletes but race car drivers aren't?????? :-/ Hands and feet are used for those things but are also used for racing a car! :google_it_noob:

And why haven't we gotten an answer on who/what are the authority on what makes someone an athlete?

I didn't came here just to argue...I gave my opinion, it wasn't meant to offend anyone!

1. Auto Racing is a sport, a motorsport.

-> 'sports' are football, volleyball, baseball and stuff like that any school and college offers.

2. I guess most people have a different definition because of a long lasting history of sports and what an athlete is and who isn't.The history of sports defined who's an athlete. It doesn't matter there you go, when someone's talks about athletes you think about football, basketball, ..., runners,...

Yes, drivers need an althetic body or least enough fitness to handle racing.

You guys don't even gimme a chance and I doubt you actually listen or think about what I'm tryin to say.

I'm here, because I like NASCAR, I play NASCAR games, because I like NASCAR.

Now, don't tell me I don't respect them, I do.

who/what are the authority on what makes someone an athlete

History? The kind of sport or physical activity you do? I don't know.

It might be the dominating thought which divides motorsport from other sports, so divides racecar drivers from athletes, because people learned it different (e.g. schools offers sports instead of racing sports, so students only learn sports like football, basketball,... to be athlete's sports) and it stuck in mind.

This isn't necessarily against racecar drivers.

Everybody knows how much it takes and that it isn't easy, but bad ass hard to race.

Tho, it's obvious a driver wouldn't be better than a runner in running, football player in football (running, throwing, tackling, vision, reading...), a volleyball player in volleyball, basketball player in basketball.Just like a xxxxxx player wouldn't be better in racing than a driver.

Does that mean cheerleaders are athletes

Well, they need acrobatic skill, dancing skills aside other skills and strenghts.

I guess that it should be changed. I also think of racers when I hear of athletes.

I do give you a chance, if I didn't I wouldn't have bother to reply to you. I do know you respect Nascar racers because of this post:http://www.simracingdesign.com/573143-post13.html

Thanks for the answer. :)

I knew there was a reason I didn't like schools... XD

Well, they need acrobatic skill, dancing skills aside other skills and strenghts.

But using your argument of "I've never heard them referred to as athletes" would say otherwise. :-/ That was my point. (y)
